jīva brahman aikya
Unity, identity, or equality (aikya, from eka, one) of brahman (infinite consciousness) and the limited, living experience (jīva).
Extended definition:
- jiva brahman aikya
This is beautifully emphasized in the famous verse by Śaṅkarācārya:
brahma satyaṃ jaganmithyā jīvo brahmaiva nāparaḥ ।
"Consciousness is real, the world is dependently real. The living entity and infinite consciousness are not different."
How are they equal? Brahman is the real supporting ground (adhiṣṭhāna) of jagat (world) and jīva (consciousness plus the experience of living individuality).
