ācārya
A teacher. Literally: someone of good, exemplary conduct, ācāra. Someone with the right attitude.
Extended definition:
- acarya
As with so many Sanskrit words, there is also a nice nuance in this word. A teacher is someone who brings knowledge to the right place (ā-cara), namely to you!
If the ignorance is then taken away in the listener for good, we can speak of a guru.
It is nice if the teacher knows where the knowledge comes from (sampradāyavit), well versed in the śāstram (śrotriya) and steadfast in knowledge of the truth (brahma niṣṭhā), in other words, lives as brahman.
